The Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto is the origin shrine for the Shinto deity of rice, Inari. Fushimi Inari Taisha, was enshrined on the first Day of the Horse of the second month of 711, during the Nara Period. Kitsune, the fox, is the messenger to Inari, and fox statues are everywhere on this 233-meter high mountain. Thousands of vermilion torii gates define the path over the mountain.
